The In Between Years: Getting Quality Photos of your School Age Children

I have been photographing schools for years, even up to 4000 kids in one year. I have seen joyful kids, sad kids, kids that are afraid of the camera, and kids that have full hair and makeup on for picture day at the age of eight. Here’s the deal. They are all beautiful. And they are all trying to be seen. Something that I read the other day stopped me in my tracks.

I was scrolling Instagram and I happened upon The Mom Psychologist and she stated this, “The thing no one tells you aout ages 6-10: These are the forgotten years. Everyone focuses on babies and teens, but THIS is when their core beliefs about themselves form.”

I have also found this to be true in photography. We pay for our newborns and high school seniors to have professional photos taken, and that is beautiful, but what about those other years? The in between years? The finding our way and assessing our internal worth years? I would argue that it is more important to make sure that our children are seen an celebrated in those years when they are finding their way. That’s why I lean into all ages of photography and every child that comes through my doors is seen exactly as they are, and I try to capture the magic and beauty of where they are in this moment, at this stage.

Let’s do this! Bryan College Station, let’s make sure our kids are seen, known, and celebrated in this simple portraiture that just focuses on them and where they are right now.
